We went to visit our Tia Marta (whom the kids call "Nina"). She is a postulant at the abbey, so we got to see some special things.
The town has very old buildings which are well-kept for the most part, and so picturesque! Tessie said that when she thinks of "Europe" Eichstatt is the kind of town that comes into her mind. I took about four zillion pictures.
This is the main square of the town. The statue is of St. Winibald, the brother of St. Walburga and the patron of Eichstatt. |
Here is the school of the abbey, plus a bit of the abbey in yellow. |
The stairs go into the atrium of the abbey. |
A Madonna statue from the Middle Ages--the only thing they replaced was Jesus's head. |
A government building. |
There was a little bridge across this river. |
This statue of St. John Nepomucene, who was drowned after refusing to reveal sins told him in confession, is on the bridge. |
The very impressive door to the cathedral of the village. |
Nice organ! |
The stained-glass windows were gorgeous. |
It is a Baroque-era church. |
Another statue of St. Winibald, I think. |
The picture is blurry, but this side-altar was too beautiful not to post. |
The ceiling. |
I love this Madonna statue. |
My aunt then led us into another part of the church which was under construction. |
These are tombs. |
An intricate pillar. |
This is one very old holy-water font. |
There was a really cool hallway. |
Then we went outside... |
...And saw more cool buildings. |
This is the room Tessie and I shared at the abbey guesthouse. |
There was sparkly water waiting for us. :) |
This is an old fortress on the outskirts of Eichstatt. |
Beautiful! I'm so jealous you guys got to spend so much time with Nina!! Btw my favorite picture is def that ceiling shot, very cool. The pillar is amazing too!
